Jacó at the Pacific coast of Costa Rica is not soooo the bringer. But you can do a lot around Jacó. Surfing, a visit to the Manuel Antonio National Park and at one place you can watch crocodiles in the wild for free.

Our tips around Jacó, Costa Rica

Surfing, sun, beach – for the rest of the time in Costa Rica we stay at the Pacific Ocean. After wonderful days in Coco we will cross the famous Panamericana to Jacó. As Coco is popular with American pensioners, it is all about surfing and regularly attracts professionals. Already on the way we observe huge waves, which are by no means something for daring (“as soon as I see waves, I pull my parents like a husky the sled”) babies.

Finding shelter wasn’t that easy. Somehow nothing appealed to us. And the place is also expensive. Finally we decide for the Blue Palm Hotel (“best deal in town”) and get a room with kitchenette. Of course, the child immediately discovers the beautiful pool and wants to go there every free minute. Jacó himself is relatively unspectacular except for a few cool murals. A main street with tourist shops, bars, restaurants, supermarkets.

The house beach is long and wide, but not really stunning. Nevertheless, Jacó is a good starting point for excursions to the Manuel Antonio National Park and the surrounding region. The first destination is Playa Hermosa, which, as the name suggests, is beautiful, but with the giant waves (professional competitions take place here regularly) we leave it at the walk and sip delicious smoothies in “La Ola”. The accommodations directly on the beach look great, probably far above our budget.

Is the Manuel Antonio National Park worth it? Yes!

We continue to the most popular national park of the country, Manuel Antonio. It’s hot, the humidity is felt to be 100 percent and at the latest from the city of Quepos the traffic just sneaks. We are intercepted at a parking lot. “Is this the National Park?” we want to know. “No,” says the car park attendant, and after a look at Matilda, he has an understanding. We drive on and park closer to the entrance. Costs 3000 Colones. For what? Nobody knows. 16 dollars per person and a bag check later we’re in.

We walk the Sendero Perezoso (Sloth Trail) and are astonished. It is asphalted and there seem to be a lot of people in this park. Everywhere it is full. The visitors couldn’t be more different. Locals in swimming trunks and cool boxes on their way to the beach. Tourists dressed as Indiana Jones, sweating in their expedition clothes and thick hiking boots. And we. Child in a stretcher, always on guard against the many monkeys, coatis, raccoons and iguanas who “quite self-confidently” have their food on their mind. The warm sea offers hardly any cooling, but once again inspires the child. All in all, the Manuel Antonio National Park is quite nice, but in our opinion it is not an absolute must for Costa Rica travellers.

Actually, on the way to Alajuela we wanted to visit the Carara National Park. But then we would have had to leave our luggage in the car and Costa Rica always warns against that. So we leave it and stop instead at the crocodile bridge in Tarcoles (on the road between San Jose and Jacó). The gigantic critters lurk directly under the bridge and quite probably we are not with the short one on the arm. Especially when Matilda waves the Crocs enthusiastically and wants to lean over the balustrade. With a fruit shake distracted it goes to the last station in Costa Rica.

We are once again for a night in Alajuela in the Paradise Hotel and adjust to our next country at dinner in the Jalapeños Central. The return of the rental car works without problems and with the shuttle we are in a few minutes at the airport. The airline Volaris had never sent us a confirmation mail, but everything worked. Gracias and adios, Costa Rica. You are great, we are a bit in love and hope to see each other again!

Why Jacó?

If you want to be in nature, don’t need a big choice of bars and restaurants and you’re not a surfer, Jacó may not be for you…

But if you just want to relax for a few days, have a party or want some luxury for a small price, then you’ve come to the right place.

Jacó is really not what most tourists imagine when they think of Costa Rica.

It’s something else.

Jacó is also interesting for you if you don’t have much time because it is very quick and easy to reach. That’s why many locals like it. Personally I like it for the same reason. I don’t own a car and have little time. So if I want to get to the beach quickly, Jacó is a good option.
Activities in and around Jacó

While it is possible to see nature and animals in the nearby surroundings, Jacó is more known for other activities. Surfers will find a good wave here at almost any time of year and other water sports enthusiasts will also get their money’s worth. The main activity is clearly the 4 km long beach, which is only interrupted by 2-3 river mouths and invites you to take a walk on the beach at any time.

Jacó also offers a very active nightlife for all kinds of people. There are countless bars and restaurants that are open until late into the night. There are also several casinos where you can try your luck.

Jacó is also known as a mecca for prostitution, which is legal in Costa Rica. While you don’t notice anything during the day, at night it is openly displayed in some bars and casinos. Those who have a problem with this should probably stay away from these places.

If you want to experience something else during your stay in Jacó, you can do so at any time. Nearby you can paraglide, visit the Mirador, swim under waterfalls, canopy or admire the crocodiles in the Rio Tarcoles.

Tip: Sunsets are always spectacular in Jacó. Best to enjoy in a beach bar

Party & Nightlife in Jaco, Costa Rica

Jacó is known as an absolute party hotspot in Costa Rica. There are several bars and clubs that practically stand side by side, so you can theoretically fall out of one club and fall right into the next. This is exactly why Jacó is a popular backpacking destination, as you can combine parties until sunrise with curing your hangover on the beach. I was also told that it should be a great place for surfing. But the drugs also come with parties, so it’s not surprising that Jacó has one of the highest drug consumption and trade rates in Costa Rica. Prostitution is also a big problem here and I couldn’t believe my eyes when we just walked through a hotel bar plus casino and about 80% of the people there were prostitutes. Yes, that’s one side of Jacó. A quite difficult one, in my opinion.

However, there is also another side of Jacó. One that lets you discover the beauty of the Costa Rican coast, that lets you taste the salt of the sea and hear the breaking of the waves. One with dark brown to almost black sand, which sometimes even seems to glitter. This is the Jacó I got to know. When I was in La Fortuna, we met a Costa Rican couple who spontaneously joined me and so we drove to Jacó. And since they know the place quite well, they showed me three different beaches: Playa Jacó, Playa Hermosa and Playa Caletas. Of course we went dancing one evening, but in this article I want to show you the beauty of Jacó’s pacific beaches. So, sit back, relax and accompany me on a short trip to the sea!

Playa Jacó is the most famous beach in Jacó and also the easiest to reach. Many people go surfing and boogieboarding in the waves. Unfortunately there are very few spots with protective shade, so either bring your own parasol or apply sun cream every five minutes. Remember that it really gets hot in Jacó! Jumping into the water can be a real rest.

Playa Hermosa literally means “beautiful beach”. Well, what can I say, I think the name was chosen absolutely right. The sand here is a little darker and glitters a little more. It is much quieter than Playa Jacó and there are no restaurants or bars nearby. Here there is only the beach. Practically untouched. Besides, there were hardly any other people there, that means we had the beach just for us. A really nice place to relax at the sea.

Playa Caletas is a beach zone that can only be reached by driving through the Hotel Villa Caletas, so pay attention to the opening hours there. The beach itself is public, but there is simply no other way to get there. A car is more than recommendable, as it is absolutely too far to walk! But the way to the beach alone is already beautiful, as the hotel is located on a mountain, which is why one can immediately enjoy a great view to Jacó. Playa Caletas is definitely the best place to see the sunset over the sea.
